Find out how olive growing has been characterising the life and economy of our land for more than two centuries. In the morning you could visit the Olive Tree Museum (closed on Tuesdays) of the Fratelli Carli Firm in Imperia. The Museum was awarded the European Museum of the Year Award in 1993, sponsored by the European Council. The Museum is set right in the heart of Oneglia which has a millenary tradition as an oil harbour. It is definitely a unique place that testifies the symbolic and cultural value of the most ancient tree ever grown by man. As you walk along its rooms, you will look at six thousand years of Mediterranean civilisation thanks to a series of recreated habitats that are connected to olive oil production: dry walls used to terrace the slopes of the Maritime Alps; an ancient oil mill; and the hold of a Roman ship. After your journey through history, you will visit the modern plant of the Fratelli Carli Firm and then opt for some shopping in its shop. Lunch follows in a typical local restaurant of the area to taste some Ligurian specialities. In the afternoon, visit to the famous Raineri company, founded in 1910 where you are invited to assist in the various stages in extra virgin olive oil production. The company’s policy is to offer the customer an insight into the image of high quality that accompanies extra virgin olive oil. The Raineri oil was notably included on the menu of an official gala dinner in Stockholm for the Nobel Prize giving in 1990 and again on the menu at the Jubilee in 1991. |
