The inhabitants of Western Liguria - a narrow strips of land between the Mediterranean Sea and the Alps - their relationship with the sea has always had ups and downs. It was their primary source of wealth in Phoenician, Greek and Roman times when the ships carrying olive oil sailed along its coasts, but it turned dangerous in the Middle Ages when the Saracens ruled the waves and their Genoese neighbours were powerful enemies.
People thus left the coast, which was full of traces of the flourishing classical civilisation, and settled in the safer and inaccessible hinterland. Here a constellation of small stone villages was built along the salt and pilgrimage road and their life has been characterised by the olive and vine seasons for more than one thousand years.
This is an unknown aspect of Liguria which has been rather neglected by tourists since the mid-nineteenth century when modern tourism - mainly focused on the coasts - was born. But this "hidden" Liguria can reveal ancient traditions and unpolluted landscapes.
